When you pick up and start reading this 650 page book you think you have reached THE book about professional protection. But you are just scratching the surface more than anything. The first 150 pages or so of this 650 page book goes into good detail on the importance and what is needed in one area of professional protection, which all fits in to about 2 seconds of a encounter.The rest of the book is filled with many detailed examples of many past situations. Hundreds of encounters and attempted encounters are explained and discussed. This is very useful to someone who does this for a living, and is a interesting read from a analytical and historical stand point, but not so much use to any body else.
The last group of pages are examples of letters and white pages that are generally given to protectees.
Over all what you will get out of this book depends on what you need. If you need a great well written collection of hundreds of past events that has happened in the world than this is a great book. If you are more interested in the actual process, or at least what happens within a very important 2 seconds of a physical encounter of a assassination like attempt. Than you might only enjoy the first 1/4 of this book. This one is a very much a try before you buy type of book.

Great book. Lots of information for those in the protection field or those looking for a realistic idea of what it takes to protect yourself and others. The tad drills are fun and practical.
Gavin de Becker always delivers. Great book
de Becker provides solid, thoughtful and well researched information. The summaries of assaults and shootings is very informative. He provides real life lessons. A definite "should read" for anyone interested in the field. Well done!
I have read Gavin de Becker's other books and was very interested in purchasing Just 2 Seconds. If you don't mind reading a textbook, give this book a try. I learned a lot and was worth the read, but like most text books, it was not a great literary work of art and only presented the facts.
This book was really a let down. This book is larger than it needs to be, inferring that it has a lot of information. But,it's format of presenting the attack information is right out of wikapedia. Joe LaSorsa's books are much better.
The first third of the book is very informative.
It had interesting things to say about how bodyguards do their job, what they should be looking for when they are "on"; and what factors may affect their ability to look after their 'protectee' . There is extra info in the last couple chapters. BUT The bulk at the middle of the book is a compendium of very dry case studies, of interest only if you already understand the subject on a higher level.
Still, it was an interesting read, even for a casual reader, and I'm sure it would be very informative for someone on the job, or for a protectee or an organizer of events that may included people in need of protection.
I bought this after buying The Gift of Fear. For a lay person, The Gift of Fear is a better book. The data in Just 2 Seconds takes up at least half of the book and the rest of it is a very technical analysis of what the data shows what are the exact steps necessary to protect someone, what you can do to increase your odds under specific circumstances, etc. Make no mistake it's a fascinating read, just that the lay person isn't its audience. I would have preferred to know that before purchasing.
