Logan McCrae has lost everything he values Wealth and career, family and love. Then Walter Dietz, his former boss at the National Security Agency contacts him. They've intercepted a cell phone call from a European terrorist cell that mentions the Deschutes River. It's probably nothing, but Dietz wants Logan to spend six months looking for dots to connect, just in case.
For Logan, it's a chance to rebuild his life and maybe reconnect with his 19-year-old daughter, who was seriously injured in an accident. They pack up their few remaining possessions and move to Maupin, a small town on the Deschutes, and face an uncertain - and ultimately dangerous - future.
Besides Logan, you'll meet Casey Williams, a young fishing guide trying to rekindle an old flame, and Hank O Leary, a professional fly-tyer and Vietnam vet who falls in love with the unlikeliest of mates. Like the braided currents of the Deschutes, each life interacts with the others as the characters grow in their understanding of life, love, and themselves.
River in the Sun is a non-traditional thriller. There are no steely-eyed heroes who shoot people left and right, no explosions, no car chases (although there is one with rowboats). Instead, ordinary people are caught up in extraordinary events and respond as best they can. It is a compelling story that is at turns lyrical and intense, funny and deeply moving.
If you like Oregon, rivers, the Deschutes, fly fishing, or simply enjoy a good book about people dealing with real-life issues, you'll enjoy River in the Sun.

I'm a fly-fisher who has been visiting Maupin annually. I expected a book set there would hold extra appeal for me. I would recognize places, and the story would involve my favorite sport. I didn't expect the writing, characterization, and plotting to be high points. Thus I completely underestimated Scott Richmond's talent as an author. There's a plain precision in his use of language that brings out the simple, reliable, and humbly noble personalities of the good folks who people Maupin in this novel. That style makes you feel like one of the locals in the Okay coffee-shop, someone participating in their daily chat and banter. They're unpretentious and pleasant to be with. The precision also elicits a sense of being with the characters on the Deschutes River, seeing the surrounding landscape, and doing all the little things involved in fly-fishing with them. The author really "takes you there".
The motivation behind the main plot involves some suspension of disbelief but, once you get past that, the threads are well-paced, credible, interesting, and neatly woven. The side-stories all complement it and are fine vignettes in their own right.
The culmination of the main plot is gripping and I was in "can't put it down" mode all the way there. There's some tying up of loose ends after the crux, which slows it to a gradual halt. However, I was happy with that because I didn't want it to end. It's one of those books that leaves you with the feeling you'll have trouble finding a next read you'll enjoy as much. And I say that not just as someone who enjoys fly-fishing and the Deschutes River, but also as a general reader.
In addition to the written version, I got the audio-book, which is narrated by the author. His clear narration style and voice suited the story so well that I ended up listening to, rather than reading, almost all of it.

River in the Sun (Audible Audio Edition) Scott Richmond 4Rivers Press Books Reviews
Great mix of a fly fishing life style, and small town Oregon. Great plot and storyline from a great guy in the fly fishing industry.
GOOD
keeps your interest
Scott Richmond book "River in the Wind" combines fly fishing, adventure and romance, keeps the reader interested always. Mr. Richmond's book is a must read for everyone not just fly fishermen. A slice of real life conflicts and redemption that readers can relate to in their own daily lives.
I liked the book because of its set location in Oregon, where I'm from. however the plot was difficult to follow at times and didn't flow together all that well. That being said- I did finish it, which is saying something. I also learned a bit about fly fishing, and have a better understanding of why my dad can spend hours fishing )
I enjoyed the book and in particular the frequent fly fishing passages. The author wove interpersonal relationships into the plot, which added substance to the novel, but he could have done a better job of character development. The plot seemed contrived at times but I enjoyed the plot twists and turns. His writing keeps the reader in suspense, which made the book captivating.
I've already ordered another copy as a gift for a friend.
LOVED THIS BOOK!!! Couldn't put it down! Characters were very well developed. Wish there was a follow up book with the next chapter in their lives. Also, loved the way fly fishing was woven into the story--Unlike other books where the authors don't seem like they've ever been on the river.
