The Holy Spirit Questions of Life 9781907950155 Books
First off, I have to confess that I didn't actually buy this book - I got it while on an Alpha course from the friendly people of St Aldate's in Oxford - worth a visit if you're ever in the city.To tell you what this is, it is a short 60-80 page pamphlet on the Holy Spirit designed specifically for the Alpha weekend, where the focus is on the third person in the Trinity - Holy Spirit. As with all Nicky Gumbel books, it is rich in material, quotation and anecdote while being written in an easily accessible style and a crisply reasoned manner.
As with the material on the weekend, there are three sections:
Introduction - How this book should be used for the Alpha weekend.
1. Who is the Holy Spirit? - Covering how 'he' is the 3rd person in the trinity and his Biblical context (e.g. the story of Bezalel in the Old Testament, who the Bible says gained various artistic skills from the Holy Spirit).
2. What does the Holy Spirit do? - How the Holy Spirit inspires Christians and their ministry, as well as providing confirmation of Jesus' story.
3. How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit? - Covering the releasing of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 and the gifts of the spirit, including an in-depth covering of speaking in tongues (which is often used on the away-weekend). Also has a trouble-shooting section on things that may block the Holy Spirit.
On top of this there is also a reference section (naming 12 books that can be read for further information on the Holy Spirit) and a 'Study Guide' (which has 6-8 questions on each section of the book, for use with people on the course).
Overall, a worthwhile purchase for researching the Holy Spirit and obviously a good investment for any church running an Alpha course, since otherwise I'd have never written this review!
P.S. If you're into Nicky Gumbel's material, then I thoroughly recommend Searching Issues or Wilberforce: The Challenge for Today (which is only 20 pages but has been mysteriously overlooked).
